A peer-reviewed paper co-authored by Ruben Snellings, ASCCENT project partner from KU Leuven, entitled “RILEM TC 309-MCP: Recommendation on Terminology for Mineral Carbonation Construction Products”, was published in the journal Materials and Structures in 2025.
As mineral carbonation gains increasing attention as a potential pathway to reducing the carbon footprint of construction materials, clear and consistent terminology is essential for advancing research and supporting the development of reliable assessment methods. Differences in terminology can make it difficult to compare research findings, communicate methodologies and establish a common understanding across scientific and industrial communities.
The paper addresses this challenge by providing recommendations for terminology related to mineral carbonation in construction products. By establishing a clearer and more consistent language, the recommendations support communication among researchers and practitioners and help strengthen the foundations for comparable, reproducible research in this evolving field.
This publication contributes to the broader effort to advance knowledge on sustainable construction materials and facilitate collaboration between research institutions and industry. It also highlights the importance of shared terminology and scientific consensus in supporting the development and assessment of innovative technologies for reducing environmental impacts in the construction sector.
